About Newt

Wengay "Newt" Newton’s story is really inspiring — it’s a powerful example of resilience and how strong family values can help overcome tough circumstances. Growing up in one of the most impoverished parts of Pinellas County and seeing his mom work so hard must’ve had a huge impact on how he sees the world and shaped his own work ethic.

After graduating from Northeast High School in 1981, Wengay “Newt” Newton pursued higher education at ITT Technical Institute, where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Electronics Engineering in 1983. Determined to continue building his knowledge and skills, Newt went on to attend Hillsborough Community College and St. Petersburg College, furthering his commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth.

In 1983, Newt began an 18-year career with the Xerox Corporation, where his dedication and technical expertise earned him a promotion to Senior Printing Systems Engineer. His time at Xerox not only solidified his experience in the private sector but also reflected his drive to rise through the ranks through hard work and determination.

It was at Xerox that Newt met and later married his soulmate, Melissa. Together, they have shared 34 years of marriage, raising a strong, loving family with four children and eleven grandchildren. Their enduring partnership and dedication to family values are a testament to Newt's commitment not only to his career but also to the people closest to him.

After a long and successful career at Xerox, Newt formalized his lifelong passion for community service by entering politics.

He served eight years on the St. Petersburg City Council and four years in the Florida Legislature, where he made a significant impact on his community.

Reflecting on his journey, Newt says, "After serving 8 years on the St. Petersburg City Council and 4 years in the Florida Legislature, I return to Tallahassee with the relationships and bridges that I have built to bring home millions in much-needed resources for District 62."
